The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that an inmate died in the Washington County Jail on Saturday.
Saturday, May 17th, at approximately 6:05 a.m., Corrections Officers discovered Kyle E. Mashburn, 42, unresponsive in his cell. Staff rendered immediate aid and EMS was dispatched to the jail. Preliminary evidence indicates that Mashburn committed suicide. District coroner pronounced Mashburn deceased and next of kin was notified.
Mashburn was in the jail awaiting trial/sentencing after accepting a plea of no contest to one count of Rape and one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Child, for a recommended sentence with the Kansas Department of Corrections for 299 months.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) responded to determine the circumstances of the inmate’s death. The KBI investigates deaths that occur in Kansas jails and prisons via state statutes, unless the inmate who dies was being regularly attended by a physician.
An autopsy will be conducted. The investigation is ongoing and pending by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
