Kansas Launches First Substance Use Recovery Unit in Prisons

Governor Laura Kelly announced the opening of Kansas' first substance use recovery/work release unit at the East Campus in Lansing. This 200-bed facility offers a six-month comprehensive re-entry program aimed at overcoming addiction through tailored cognitive behavioral instruction, fostering life skills and work goals, preparing residents for successful reintegration into society.

Human skeletal remains in Lansing identified

The human skeletal remains found in Leavenworth County have been identified as Derrick U. Collins, who went missing in June 2022 at the age of 59. The autopsy did not reveal any signs of trauma, and there is currently no evidence of foul play in his death. Final autopsy results are pending.

Lansing man arrested connected to overdose death of 15-year-old

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has issued an arrest warrant in connection to the fentanyl overdose death of a 15-year-old in January 2023. Torin M. Baughman, 19, was arrested for first-degree murder, or in the alternative distribution of a controlled substance causing death, and aggravated endangering a child. The Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office is expected to prosecute the case.
