Area Events Rescheduled or Postponed Due To Blizzard Warning

The following events have been rescheduled, postponed or cancelled/closed due to the upcoming blizzard. Updated at 7:00 PM 2/22/19. Please submit your cancellation/postponement via e-mail at


  • Marshall Co. 24/7 Recycling Site – Closed until the afternoon of 2/25.
  • Succession Planning School – Cancelled Saturday (Will Reschedule)


  • 1A Regional Finals @ Onaga: Girls @ 11 AM, Boys 12:30 PM Saturday
  • 1A Regional Finals @ Washington: Girls 10 AM, Boys 11:30 AM Saturday on FM 95.5 KNDY.
  • MHS Forensics Tournament is cancelled for Saturday 2/23.
  • The MHS Play is postponed until Wed. Feb. 27th at 7:30 PM.


Wichita, Class 5A and 6A tournaments will continue as scheduled

Salina Class 4A and Hays Class 3-2-1A will adjust the competition schedule due to the winter storm watch in place for those communities. There will be no changes to the Friday schedule, matches and rounds will continue as scheduled for Friday.

On Saturday, three modifications will be made to the competition schedule:

    1. Breaks will be limited between rounds and rounds will run as soon as mats and officials are prepared; competition is still scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and time between rounds will be reduced.
    2. All medal round matches (1st, 3rd, and 5th place matches) will run concurrently by weight class. All three matches in a weight class will begin at the same time.
    3. Awards will be presented by weight class for the first four weight classes immediately following the conclusion of all medal matches in the 126 pound class; the next four sets of awards will be given immediately following the conclusion of the 152 pound medal round matches; the next four sets of awards will be presented immediately following the 195 medal round matches; and the final two awards will be presented by class immediately following the conclusion of the 285 pound medal matches.

Derek Nester was born and raised in Blue Rapids and graduated from Valley Heights High School in 2000. He attended Cowley College in Arkansas City and Johnson County Community College in Overland Park studying Journalism & Media Communications. In 2002 Derek joined Taylor Communications, Inc. in Salina, Kansas working in digital media for 550 AM KFRM and 100.9 FM KCLY. Following that stop, he joined Dierking Communications, Inc. stations KNDY AM & FM as a board operator and fill-in sports play-by-play announcer. Starting in 2005 Derek joined the Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network as a Studio Coordinator at 101 The Fox in Kansas City, a role he would serve for 15 years culminating in the Super Bowl LIV Championship game broadcast. In 2021 he moved to Audacy, formerly known as Entercom Communications, Inc. and 106.5 The Wolf and 610 Sports Radio, the new flagship stations of the Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network, the largest radio network in the NFL. Through all of this, Derek continues to serve as the Digital Media Director for Sunflower State Radio, the digital and social media operations of Dierking Communications, Inc. and the 6 radio stations it owns and operates across Kansas.
