Mitchell County Commissioners – January 8, 2018

The Mitchell County Commissioners met on Monday, January 8. Jesse Benedick appeared before the commissioners to discuss a potential landscaping project for the riverfront in Beloit via a program through K-State called Technical Assistance to Brownfields or TAB.

The TAB program funds and provides technical assistance to communities and other stakeholders on brownfield issues with the goal of increasing the community’s understanding and involvement in cleanup and revitalization. They assist in helping move brownfield sites forward toward cleanup and reuse.

Benedick also asked for the commissioners blessing to work in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in the preparation stages of the potential project. He asked for the commissioners to sign a waiver to allow the KDHE to perform soil sampling. The commissioners were open to the prospect of taking advantage of the TAB program. This potential future project is still in its infancy with work moving forward on the feasibility and planning stages. Further information about the program is available online at ksutab.org

County Health Nurse Courtney Murrow said she is in the process of looking for a new vehicle for the health department. They have two currently, but have had ongoing issues with them. She also said she is considering purchasing a generator for the Health Department. The main area of concern is their vaccine coolers remaining operable in case of a lengthy power outage. Murrow added that they are in the process of trying to fill a multi-faceted position within the department as well.

An interlocal agreement between the county and interested parties for the Little Red Schoolhouse restoration project was signed and approved as prepared by Beloit City Attorney Katie Schroeder. The city, USD 273 and others have already approved and signed the agreement.

The commissioners approved Resolution 1-18 which states that financial statements and reports for the year ending 2017 are to be prepared according to state statute. They also approved $28,000 be transferred from the Election Fund to the Election Technology Fund.

A proclamation was adopted making January 2018 Stalking Awareness Month in Mitchell County. It recognizes stalking as intentional harassment or a pattern of behavior directed at a specific person, causing that person to feel fear and endangerment. They also proclaimed January 2018 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

The commissioners then approved Tom Claussen as Commission Chairman and Commissioner Mike Cooper as Vice-Chairman for 2018. Effective January 15.

The Mitchell County Commissioners are next scheduled to meet on Monday, January 15 at 8:30 a.m. at the courthouse in Beloit.
